Variation in the Constituents of the Body Fluid in Burned Dogs

Abstract
Blood pressure, urine output, hematocrit, blood sugar, total serum protein, albumin/globulin ratio, non protein nitrogen, sodium, potassium and chloride in the serum, total urine nitrogen and urine chloride were measured hourly during the first 24 hours in 12 burned dogs covering 25 to 33% of the body surface area. These measurements revealed the following results:
1. Blood pressure and urine output were decreased in the burned dogs, whereas hematocrit increased rapidly.
2. The blood sugar of the burned dogs increased transiently.
3. There was no marked alteration in the total serum protein of the burned dogs. A/G in the serum of the dogs decreased transiently, whereas serum non protein nitrogen and total urine nitrogen decreased progressively.
4. The sodium content of the serum of the burned dogs decreased, whereas the potassium content increased. The chloride content of the serum of the dogs showed no marked change, but urine chloride diminished promptly.
